MLB.com has released the 2023 Cy Young Award nominees and their rankings, as determined by its own voting panel. A total of 49 voters determined the top five candidates and assigned them points on a sliding scale (five points for first place, four points for second place, etc.).
The American League (AL) Cy Young Award candidates are Cole, Kevin Gausman (Toronto Blue Jays), Shohei Ohtani (Los Angeles Angels), Nathan Eovaldi (Texas Rangers), and Frazier Valdez (Houston Astros).
It was a two-way tie for first place. He received 38 first-place votes. In 25 starts this season, Cole went 10-3 with a 2.76 ERA in 156 and one-third innings pitched. He leads the AL in innings pitched and is second in ERA. His strikeout rate is his lowest since 2017, but he’s on pace for his lowest ERA in the last four seasons.
Cole signed a free agent contract with the Yankees for the most money ever paid to a pitcher ($324 million). In his four seasons in pinstripes, he has excelled in ace duties.
Cole was a five-time Cy Young Award finalist, but never won. This season is an award curiosity.
Meanwhile, Ohtani, whose performance on the mound was deemed to be down from last season (2022), finished third in the poll with two first-place votes. In 130 and two-thirds innings pitched, he posted a 3.17 ERA. His .185 batting average was first. Ohtani, who finished in the final four of the actual voting last season, is looking to move up this season.
The National League (NL) is a race. Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Zack Galen and San Diego Padres left-hander Blake Snell are ranked first and second, respectively, in this mock poll.
