Chinese professional football team Shandong advanced to the semifinals of the 2023 Chinese Football Association (CFA) Cup on penalties after a 1-1 draw with Beijing Guoan in the quarterfinals at the Beijing Workers’ Stadium on August 31.
At the official post-match press conference, Choi Kang-hee had some words for Beijing coach Ricardo Soares’ behavior during the match.
“In my 30 years of coaching, I’ve never seen a coach come to the bench of another team and do a ceremony. I don’t know if it’s because he was in a hurry, but it’s unacceptable,” he said. Choi also pointed out that no one stopped the opposing coach from doing this, and criticized the game management.
Soares ran to the visitors’ bench to celebrate after Beijing’s Kang Sang-woo scored the equalizer in the 18th minute of the match. Choi took issue with the scene.
“Is it respectful to criticize the opposing coach in such an (official) capacity?” a Chinese journalist asked. It wasn’t a question, it was a statement, and it sounded like he was criticizing Choi.
At this, Choi’s emotions exploded. He said, “I can see it with my own eyes and still talk about it. You have to act respectfully to be respected,” he said, adding, “Is that what you call a question?”
The Chinese reporter then responded, “It’s not a violation of soccer rules.” “I don’t think you understand the rules,” Choi said. If a player provokes a spectator, he can be sanctioned. If you are a soccer reporter, ask questions like a soccer reporter.”
The video of the press conference was released on YouTube and shared with Korean fans. After the press conference was over, Choi Kang-hee said, “If you’re a reporter, you should ask questions like a reporter. You’re not even a reporter,” and left the room.
